The University of New Mexico was established by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico in 1889. It was to be located in Albuquerque. Elias Stover was appointed the first president. Established as an annual event in 1991 by the University of New Mexico Division of Continuing Education. Its goal is to promote cultural understanding and to foster better community relations. The Spectacular brings the best of the Mariachi groups to Albuquerque, N.M. while it offers a workshop series designed to develop the talents of local musicians.
